Since its formation in the year 2000, ABC member T. W. Hicks, Inc. has become one of the most sought after industrial flooring companies in the Metroplex. Over the last eight years they have established an impressive reputation for client centric service and high-quality flooring on time, and on budget. Their formula for success has been rewarded with an impressive resume that includes local as well as national clients such as Coca Cola Bottling, and overseeing it all is president and founder, Tim W. Hicks.
When asked what he feels is most responsible for his company’s achievements, Mr. Hicks is quick to recognize his workforce. “Our employees are definitely our biggest contributors to the success at T.W. Hicks, Inc.” He explained, “We have superintendents that have been with us for 17 years. We are an operational driven company and it is reflected in the workmanship of each employee.” That is a kind of pride and expertise in work that you just can’t find many places.
Despite his impressive track record, Mr. Hicks is not satisfied to sit back and rest on his laurels. He continues to look to the future, “the industry has to accept that all owners are ‘going green’.” Mr. Hicks went on to elaborate, “The ways of doing construction are being changed daily because of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) programs that are being put into place.”
So, what does the future hold for T.W. Hicks? “I’m not going to try and answer that question.” Mr. Hicks replied, “Every time I do, the company exceeds my expectations. We have been very fortunate in our industry to have the growth and success that we have had for the past eight years.”
“Ownership is my favorite part about working at T.W. Hicks, Inc. This comes with a lot of ups and downs.” Mr. Hicks said, “The day to day challenges of running a business are what keep me going. I enjoy watching the company and employees grow every day.” And with the way things are going Mr. Hicks will have a lot to enjoy for a long time to come.
The Momentum Behind Momentum Mechanical
When working with a subcontractor one of the most extraordinary things you can find is a legitimate passion. It is something that has become increasingly rare, but when you find it, it can make all the difference in the world. When I had a chance to sit down and interview Mark Rutledge and Maurice Kelley from Momentum Mechanical I was lucky enough to discover precisely that – a genuine passion and enthusiasm for, not only Momentum Mechanical, but for the Construction Industry as a whole. Mark and Maurice are People who love what they do, and have dedicated their lives to this business as well as the industry.
Mark and Maurice Kelley, formed Momentum Mechanical over two years ago with a singular goal in mind, to please their customers and employees to the best of their abilities, and that is what they have been doing ever since. And it appears to be working. Despite its relatively young age, Momentum Mechanical has quickly risen and proven itself to be one of the top mechanical and plumbing contractors in North Texas, taking on projects both large and small all across the Metroplex.
When I asked Mark and Moe what they credited most for their success, their reply was simple, experience. “We have over 40 years of experience in the industry, and 18 of that was with TDIndustries.” Mark and Maurice went on to explain that they couldn’t have asked for a better proving ground than the one they got from their past employer. “We were able to learn everything we needed from TDIndustries. Connections, history, and culture, they had it all.”
Mark and Moe believe it was that foundation they got from TDIndustries that can account for their success today. “Many people under estimate the importance of skilled people in our industry. More work needs to be done to educate the masses, and show them the great careers and opportunities that are available in the construction industry.” Education in the construction industry is something that Mark has fought hard for, from serving on the Construction Education Foundation (CEF) Board to their membership in the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). He has even served on the advisory board for the Dallas Independent School District (DISD).
Mark and Maurice definitely believe the future looks bright for the industry they love so much, “There are many construction projects going strong in the DFW area. There’s still the Trinity Project. Dallas and Uptown are really being built up right now. And we have the Super Bowl coming in 2011 that will require a lot of new infrastructure to support it.” This is a great time to be working in construction.
As the interview began to wrap up I asked Mark and Maurice what their favorite part about working in the industry was, and their passion shone through one last time. “We’re there on the cusp of creating something awesome. Being in a field with nothing there and then poof a building is created. You make it. You build it. It was void and now something exists. You make it what it is. The construction industry really is a community project. Everyone comes together to build their own community.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
